Cedar Cometh

Close Up View
This wall hanging is an artistic remembrance of the disastrous Cedar Fire that swept through Southern California in the fall of 2003. The pieced background was under construction the night the fire broke out only a couple of miles from my home. It took me many months to return to this project as the implications were far more than coincidental…Luckily my house was spared so I was able to complete this design!
The abstract wedge pieced background in greys and blacks becomes the fire’s smoke, machine appliqued to pieced fire colors. Angular flames are raw edge appliqued in bright yellows, oranges and reds, accented with teal-blue silk. Free motion machine embellishment in black and fire colors enrich the flames and the feeling of motion is enhanced with the loose tails of the thread. Hand painted background. Machine appliqued and quilted.
